Starting Slowly

“I need help starting …”

These words prompted some laughs about feeling like one of those century old vehicles requiring a crank handle to get started.

Having recently watched a series set in that era, it had me thinking about how many of our modern conveniences fill us with the view that starting is always quick and easy.

Press the button. Flick the switch. Turn the key.

Off we go.

Of course, we humans aren’t machines. We are complex and variable beings. We cannot simply re-engineer our humanness to control every minute, and every manner, of how we work and live.

Instead, we can be aware of what supports our desire to start quickly and to operate at our optimum. We can do our best to create the optimal conditions, and we can remain mindful that it isn’t always within our control.

When we accept that some days require a crank handle to get us humans going, we might start with a healthy of dose of kindness and compassion for ourselves and others.

I’ll take that sort of start over speed. How about you?
