Believe In Change
We all know the saying, be wary of the company you keep.
When it comes to the change we seek, this saying goes beyond the people we surround ourselves with and equally applies to our physical environment.
Persistent and consistent action is only possible when we maintain a strong belief in both the change we seek, and in our ability to make it.
This belief can be undermined by the stories we tell ourselves. We can find ourselves reverting back to old, unhelpful stories.
What to do?
Thanks to neuroscience we are increasingly aware of the human brain’s love of visual cues for action. Even without the research, I’m sure we can all relate to the trigger to act when seeing a certain time on a clock, for example.
So as not to fall back into the trap of repeating outdated stories, and to keep our current beliefs strong, visual cues play a huge role.
Think of your own workspace. What exists within your workspace to serve as a reminder that you have the capability and conviction to achieve the change you seek?
I know when I look around at the framed version of the altMBA mantras (for example, I promise I will continue to keep making a ruckus), the photo of me with the Cape2Cape Trek team in 2021 (ready to embark on our 5 day trek along the WA coast), and the colourful painting from the mark making workshop with The Well Within Workshop, they affirm my determination and motivation to do the important work, and to bring creativity and joy to any project I am involved in. They are some of the symbols of how I can make change happen in my work and life.
What visual cues exist in your workspace to reinforce your belief in the change you seek to make?
