Work Can Be Fun

Are we having fun yet?

I worked with a company years ago where one of the core values was fun. Despite it being evident in the bones of the workplace culture, we encountered some resistance to stating it explicitly. Fun wasn’t seen to be serious enough to be written on a corporate document.

Except that fun is serious business.

Thankfully in the years since more and more workplaces have seen the importance of creating a fun environment in which to work. And, whilst the stories of such workplaces focus on injecting some playfulness and team camaraderie into the everyday, fun does show up in other ways.

It is fun to be engaged on meaningful and purposeful work.

It is fun to be solving complex workplace problems.

It is fun to bring satisfaction to our customers.

It is fun to identify new ideas.

It is fun to master new skills and knowledge.

The benefit of valuing fun in our workplace has great spin-off benefits, such as increased trust, care, empathy, and engagement with our fellow team members. All building a virtuous circle of positivity in our workplace cultures.

At this time of year we can get weighed down with the stress and pressure of closing out a year. I’m curious where you might inject a little fun into your work today.
