What Is A Weed?

When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.

I was reminded of this saying as I observed the weeds taking over part of my garden. Ack, look at all of those pesky weeds, I thought.

As I walked closer, one in particular caught my eye. Sun shining on the glimmering droplets of water from the morning’s rain made for a pretty picture.

My initial reaction was to see this as a weed - by its definition a useless or annoying plant - and yet on closer inspection it was providing beauty and joy in the garden.

How often do we do that?

Our brain naturally shortcuts to the labels we regularly use and this can lead us to a story that may not be true.

In our workplaces, these assumptions can damage our relationships, our teams and our cultures.

Just as we can change the way we look at a weed, there are many opportunities for a fresh set of eyes in our workplaces. Imagine what might change when we do.
