Open The Vent

Open vent.

Stand back.

Wait for the steam to subside.

These are the instructions when using a pressure cooker.

They are useful instructions for us humans as we navigate work and life.

When the inevitable happens (read: unexpected disruptions, work files that don’t save properly, meetings that run overtime, disagreements, and more) we can experience the pressure building.

What practices do we have to identify and reflect on these pressure-building moments? Who, or what, are safe options to help us open the vent and release the steam? How might we make it a regular habit that reduces the amount of pressure building?

And, how might we support others to open their vents, too?

Perhaps standing back, opening that vent and breathing a sigh of relief might be just the change you need to navigate your day.
