Kicking The Can

The road ahead is littered with cans.

As I listened to the speech about the challenges of change, this line stood out. Emphatically made to illustrate the tendency of some (many!?) to “kick the can down the road” and the ramifications for decisions that matter, it struck a chord.

There are always situations that demand extra time and consideration. There are always circumstances that intervene with the best of intentions. There is always life.

And, there are situations where can-kicking is adopted as the preferred strategy. For varied reasons, opaque decision-making and inaction can rapidly become the norm. Whether it be on the large, global issues; within organisations and teams; or with our personal decisions, we continue to see the effects of spending our days dealing with yesterday’s cans.

I’m curious to explore how the road ahead looks, what to do with the cans littering the way, and how not to add to tomorrow’s waste. Are you?
