Comfort Blankies
Where’s my comfort blankie?
That was the question inherent in the cries of the baby who dropped his blanket from the pram whilst walking past my house. His mum picked it up, placed it back over him and all was well again.
That is a question inherent in workplace behaviours that
protect the status quo (“we’ve always done it this way!”)
and
avoid change (“we can’t do X because of Y”).
In our workplaces, comfort blankies come in different shapes and sizes.
With empathy we can acknowledge the fear, loss, stress and overwhelm that often sits behind these behaviours.
With experience and growth, we too can learn that change isn’t the end of the world.
With reassurance and teamwork, we can be comforted when change happens.
And, it’s going to be ok.
