Rhythmic Rest
In his classic book The Odyssey, Homer wrote, “there is a time for many words, and there is also a time for sleep”.
As I write, Flash the dog snores at my feet. He is a master at balancing the time for words (action) and the time for sleep.
I know that I’m not alone in choosing to push through tiredness. The thought that if I just do x (and perhaps, y) then I can rest.
With the rhythmic snoring bringing my own need for rest top of mind, I realise it is time to stop. Now. Not later.
And I don’t really need the wisdom of Homer and Flash the dog to know, as I do, how taking a quick break for a stretch or walk, a guided meditation or power nap, and sometimes, a deep-snoring sleep, provides the rest and reset needed.
The prevailing message may be to ignore our need for rest. What if we chose to honour it instead?
